Congratulations for your outstanding performance in JEE Main 2018! What was your reaction upon knowing your rank?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: Once I got to know the result of JEE Main 2018, I was very happy and excited. I secured the first rank; the feeling is still sinking in.
Tell us something about yourself. Which board have you studied under? Which school have you studied in?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I am from Andhra Pradesh. I had studied my qualifying exam from the Andhra Board. My schooling for Intermediate was from Sri Chaitanya.
What is your score in JEE Main 2018? What is your all India rank and category rank?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I scored 350 out of 360 in JEE Main 2018. I secured an AIR Rank 1 and my category rank is also the same.
Did you appear for the offline JEE Main exam or the online one? What is the reason behind this choice of yours?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I took the exam in offline mode. I am not very comfortable with the online mode of exam hence my choice. See, one should choose what one is comfortable with as it matters a lot in an exam of this stature.
Why do you want to study engineering? When did you decide to study engineering? Which branch would you be interested in? Any reason?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I have always been interested in engineering. I was in Class IX when I made up my mind to take up engineering as a career. I would like to pursue computer engineering and one of the primary reasons for this is that I am deeply interested in the field.
When did you start your JEE Main preparation? Tell us something about your preparation strategy and daily routine for JEE Main?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I started preparing for JEE Main from class IX. There is a foundation course for cracking the JEE exam. I had registered for it when I was in class IX. During the course of preparation for JEE Main 2018, I always approached my faculty when I ran into difficulties or had queries. I sought their assistance in clearing up all of those doubts and would not give up till my concepts were clear. I used to study for about nine hours every day.
Was there a difference in the preparation strategy in the last months of JEE Main considering that the board exams also are during this period? How did you manage preparation for both?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I did not prepare much for the board examination. Since the syllabus for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is the same for the board exam and JEE Main 2018, my main focus was on JEE Main as well as on JEE Advanced. I seriously did not face any problems as I was prepared. The only difference in both the exams is that one is subjective while the other one is objective. If your concepts are clear, you can tackle them all.
Did you take coaching for JEE Main and if yes from where? What are the benefits of coaching according to you?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I took coaching at Sri Chaitanya. One of the biggest advantages of taking coaching is that they help you devise the right strategy to crack the exam. It also depends upon you to study and put that to use. One should never give up till one is clear about the concepts. Also if you follow what they devise, then you can easily score good marks.
Mock tests and sample papers – how extensively did you practise with the help of these? Do you think practising from the previous year papers help and how?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I practised extensively from JEE Main sample papers. It is important to practise from the past years sample papers of JEE Main as it helps to know the level and type of questions that are asked. You are prepared for the exam in all ways if you use the past year papers for preparation. This is a must for all aspirants. You see, you can gauge your levels of preparation and hone your time management skills. If needed you could rectify and proceed with your preparation.
Are there any special books that you feel have helped with your JEE Main preparation? Are the school text books adequate for preparing for JEE Main and Class XII?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: While preparing for JEE Main 2018, I studied mainly from the NCERT books and from the notes that were provided by the coaching centre. This is more important for Chemistry where one needs to study from the NCERT books and faculty notes. As far as Physics and Mathematics are concerned, it is important to solve a lot of questions in addition to the regular preparation form the study notes and books.
Did you face any problem during the JEE Main examination? Which subject was the easiest and which was the toughest in JEE Main? What do you think is a tough thing to manage during the JEE Main exam?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I did not face any problem during the JEE Main 2018 exam. Well, I did feel that there were some ambiguous questions in Chemistry. Mathematics and Physics – I felt were very lengthy. Time management is one of the most challenging factor in the JEE Main exam. If you can manage that, then it’s good going for you.
What do you think are the key factors behind your stupendous success in JEE Main?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: I would like to attribute my success to the faculty of Sri Chaitanya as they have been very supportive and provided a lot of motivation.
How did you de-stress yourself during the preparation? What are your hobbies? How often could you pursue them?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: Every fortnight, we were taken out and that was very relaxing. Right amount of sleep is important. For me that was a de-stressing element. My hobbies include watching movies. However, during the entire duration of my preparation, I did give it up as my goals were more important.
You know you are an inspiration to thousands of students across the country. Do you have any message for future aspirants on tackling the JEE Main exam?
BhogiSuraj Krishna: My message to all those students who are aspiring to take up JEE Main is that – Be comfortable with the subjects. Enjoy learning and enjoy the preparation time you spend. Be passionate about your goals as you can drive yourself to achieve them only if you like them.
